What is electromyography / nerve conduction study (EMG)?
EMG / nerve conduction studies are the gold standard to assess nerves and muscles. Your neurologist or orthopedist may order it for numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, or burning.
The first part uses small, brief, low-intensity electrical stimuli on the skin.
The second part uses a fine needle (no shock, no injection); it only records your muscle's natural electrical activity.
We perform upper limb, lower limb, and facial studies for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathy, and disc herniation.

What is needle EMG?
Needle EMG is the muscle portion of the full study. A fine needle records electrical activity to detect muscle or nerve-root problems.
Is the team board-certified (RQE)?
Yes. Our physicians are registered with CRM-SP and hold RQE specialist credentials in both fields, ensuring quality and safety.
They completed more than six years of training, including residency at UNIFESP in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology.
They also have broad clinical and academic experience, with international publications and awards.

How should I prepare?
Preparation is simple and helps the exam go smoothly:
- Do not use creams or oils on the skin on exam day.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing (tank top or shorts underneath help).
- If you take blood thinners, ask your doctor whether to stop them before the exam.
- Fasting is not required.
- For single-fiber EMG only — tell us about recent facial Botox or pyridostigmine (Mestinon).
- Bring your physician referral and prior test results.

Does it hurt?
The exam may cause mild discomfort but is well tolerated and safe.
The first part uses small, brief, low-intensity electrical stimuli on the skin.
The second part uses a fine needle (no shock, no injection); it only records your muscle's natural electrical activity.
The needle is disposable and used only in the second stage. It is inserted into specific muscles and removed after a few seconds of recording per muscle.

How soon is the report ready?
Your report is ready within 24 hours — ideal if you need a quick follow-up with your doctor.
Can I drive or work afterwards?
Yes. You can resume normal activities immediately after the exam.
You may have mild soreness at the needle site, similar to a vaccine.
How long does it take?
Usually 30–60 minutes depending on complexity. Single-fiber EMG may take up to 90 minutes.
